London, one of the biggest cities in the world, has a rich history and traditions. Its ever increasing diversity has led to a significant rise in stress and anxiety. One approach to managing this stress is the emotional freedom technique, which has gained popularity for its benefits. This is mainly down to the fast pace of city life. There are also long commutes to and from work on overstretched public transport. Furthermore, overcrowded hotspots add to the pressure. More importantly, the extremely high cost of living contributes even more.

Working in London does not necessarily bring peace or balance either. Recently, the work environment has become highly competitive. Many workplaces — even those that promote well-being programmes — seem to be exhibiting increasingly toxic work practices. With constant stimulation from electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops or tablets or smart watches, Londoners are exposed to social media and advertising at high rates. Therefore, people living in London experience very high levels of light and noise, which increases stress.

When you live in London, you often feel like you are constantly “on.” It can be difficult to switch off, particularly at night. This is partly due to light pollution and ongoing mental stimulation. Also, anxiety and tension rise when you have to commute 40 minutes or more to work. After a long, tiresome day, travelling home can add to the stress.

This is why many people are now turning to Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to help calm the nervous system.

Why Urban Stress Hits the Nervous System Harder

Urban stress increases cortisol levels and keeps the nervous system in a constant fight-or-flight state. The digital world overloads us with information and endless new content that we can scroll through endlessly. This creates a real lack of downtime — moments when we can truly connect with ourselves without being stimulated by something.

Even when we try to rest, we often reach for our phones to scroll through easily accessible

media — to learn, watch, or distract ourselves. However, this does not allow the nervous system to reset. At the end of the day, our bodies can only handle so much stimulation. Over time, this can lead to burnout, irritability, emotional reactivity, and a deep sense of fatigue in both the nervous system and the body.

What Is Emotional freedom technique Tapping?

The good news is that support is available, and is easily accessible. One of the most promising approaches is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as EFT tapping.

EFT tapping combines gentle tapping on acupressure points with focused awareness on a specific issue — for example, stress from commuting to work. While tapping on specific meridian points, we bring attention to the problem. This helps calm the stress response in the nervous system.

Tapping School provides resources explaining what EFT tapping is. It also supports professional individuals living in London in restoring balance to their nervous systems so they can feel well again.

How EFT Helps Stressed Londoners Specifically

Many people struggle with commuting in London, especially when using public transport during peak hours. During these times, it becomes extremely overcrowded and can feel claustrophobic. Tapping before your journey can help calm social anxiety or feelings of overwhelm and release tension.

At work, if you have an important meeting, you can step into a quiet room and tap for five

minutes to reduce performance related anxiety.

After a busy day, when you return home, you can take a few minutes to switch off from work-related stress — whether it’s ongoing demands from your boss or fast approaching

deadlines.

If you struggle to fall asleep because you feel mentally activated, EFT tapping can help to calm your nervous system. This allows your mind to switch off and guides you into deeper, more restful sleep.

A Simple 3-Minute Emotional freedom technique Routine for City Stress

Let’s experience firsthand how EFT tapping works.

Start with the karate chop point, located on the fleshy side of your hand below your little finger. Here, we create a setup statement and repeat it three times while tapping gently.

You might say:

“Even though I feel overwhelmed by today and everything that happened at work, I accept how I feel.”

Repeat this three times while tapping on the karate chop point.

Next, move to the top of the head point. Here, use a short reminder phrase, such as:

“This work is really stressing me out.”

Then move to the following points, using brief reminder phrases:

  • Eyebrow: “This constant pressure in my chest.”

  • Side of the eye: “I feel like I always have to deliver at work.”

  • Under the eye: “This is causing so much tension in my body, especially my shoulders.”

  • Under the nose: “I feel this tension in my chest right now.”

  • Chin: “I don’t know what to do with this tension.”

  • Collarbone: “I can’t take this anymore.”

  • Under the arm: “I feel this stress all the time, but I’m ready to release it.”

These points correspond to specific meridian pathways that help regulate the nervous system. They also reduce the stress response in the brain and body.

When to Go Deeper

If you establish a daily tapping routine but still notice persistent stress, ongoing anxiety, or signs of burnout, it may be helpful to seek professional guidance. A qualified Emotional freedom technique practitioner can guide you beyond self-help techniques. They can create a tailored, individual approach that addresses deeper stress patterns more effectively.

Conclusion

Living in London is not easy. Stress may always be part of city life. However, you do not have to suffer.

Support is available, with simple techniques like EFT tapping — which connects the mind

and body — can help create space and calm within your nervous system. Small daily resets and a consistent EFT tapping routine can over time, help you feel more foused and resilient.
