In our clinical experience we often talk to men coming for our Acupuncture for fertility treatment, and discover that most of them are unaware that certain conditions and unhealthy habits may have a big impact on their fertility. Therefore we always try to educate these clients how to increase male fertility with a 360degrees approach.


Some of the main factors that may damage sperm include:

  • Infection. During an illness appetite may drop and there may be a lack of essential vitamins and minerals

  • Low-level cholesterol as testosterone is made from good cholesterol (HDL). This may be avoided by supplementing your diet with Vitamin E (as highly antioxidant)

Try to limit the factors listed below as much as you can as these may affect sperm count and viability, impacting on male fertility.

  • Marijuana - it makes the sperm burnt out or hang around

  • Tobacco

  • Alcohol

  • Caffeine as it robs the body of minerals, even if a small expresso prior to intercourse may increase motility of the sperm

  • Antimalaria pills

  • Steroids

  • Ulcer medication

  • EMF (electromagnetic frequency)!!! EMF affects DNA/RNA and may turn cells into cancer cells. Researches found that electromagnetic radiation from phones being kept in a man’s trouser pocket or on a belt as well as working with a laptop resting directly on their legs can lead to up to a 30% reduction in sperm being produced as well as causing many sperm to swim abnormally.

  • HEAT: Men who want to increase their fertility should keep their testicles as cool as possible as sperm likes cooler conditions and that’s why it’s located outside the body cavity. This means avoiding tight underwear and skinny jeans that may overheat the area. It’s also advisable to stop having long hot baths, saunas and avoid resting the laptop across the groin. Few studies link diets high in antioxidants with better sperm quality. In 2012, a research conducted in Spain found that men experiencing infertility manage to significantly increase healthy sperm concentration by boosting antioxidant intake. Some other positive effects of eating antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables were better rates of sperm movement, ejaculate volume, and sperm concentration.


Among the best antioxidant rich foods are cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, beans, artichokes and nuts like walnuts and hazelnuts.
